2026 AMHF Monthly Lecture: A Select Presentation of General Frederick Funston

The Alaska Mining Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its first FREE public lecture of 2026, featuring historian Nick Nugent.

This illustrated presentation explores the remarkable life of General Frederick Funston (1865–1917), widely known as “Fighting Fred Funston.” Funston was a prominent U.S. Army officer whose career spanned scientific exploration, journalism, and military service. He is best remembered for his roles in the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War, during which he earned the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism.

Before his military fame, Funston pursued scientific exploration with a focus on botany. After participating in an expedition to Death Valley, California, he traveled to Alaska in 1891, where he spent two years working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His work took him throughout the Yukon River Basin and as far north as Herschel Island, contributing valuable knowledge of Alaska’s natural environment during an important period of exploration.

Join us for an engaging evening that highlights Funston’s lesser-known Alaskan experiences and their place in the broader history of exploration, science, and military service.
